What Virginia doesn’t tax
- Virginia does not tax Social Security; benefits included in federal income are subtracted on the Virginia return.
- Military retired pay: up to $40,000 a year per person is subtracted (tax year 2025 and later), including Survivor Benefit Plan payments to a surviving spouse.
- Other pensions, IRAs and 401(k)s are taxed. At 65 or older, an age deduction of up to $12,000 per person, reduced $1 for every $1 of adjusted federal AGI above $50,000 (single) or $75,000 (married).
